Pax Autocratica Research Guide

Choose Pax Autocratica research by the bottleneck it removes, then fund, staff, and verify the unlocked capability in the current Early Access branch.

Research in Pax Autocratica should remove a known constraint. The safest priority is not a universal list of node names; it is the project that turns a visible colony, population, equipment, capture, or expedition gate into an operating capability. The live Research screen is authoritative because exact branches, costs, and timings can change during Early Access.

Start with the blocked outcome

Write down what you cannot currently do. Perhaps an objective names a structure, production cannot supply a required item, prison handling is stalled, soldiers lack a needed role, or the Star Map offers no useful next action. Search the current research interface for the prerequisite tied to that outcome.

Read every dependency shown before paying the cost. A node may unlock only the right to construct or upgrade something; materials, space, labor, and time may still stand between completion and use.

Compare projects by total implementation cost

The research price is only the first expense. Count the resulting building, input chain, worker assignment, storage, and opportunity cost. An unlock you cannot build or sustain may delay progress more than a modest project that fixes food or logistics immediately.

Question
Strong signal
Reason to wait
What gate disappears?
A current objective or broken chain names the capability
The benefit is only speculative
Can it be installed?
Space, construction stock, and prerequisites are ready
Another repair consumes the same reserve
Can it be staffed?
A worker can move without breaking food or hauling
Every citizen already holds a critical job
Can it be supplied?
Inputs have a complete route and storage
The colony has no source for the operating material

Prioritize stability before breadth

When food, recovery, transport, or storage repeatedly fails, improve the supporting system before opening another production family. A stable base can fund several later choices; a broad but starving base converts research into inactive panels.

Once essential loops survive an expedition absence, prioritize the project that serves the next chosen frontier goal. Capture preparation, soldier development, equipment supply, and mission access should follow the objective you plan to attempt, not an imagined endgame order.

Validate every unlock after completion

Pause when research completes. Reopen the relevant interface and locate the new control, recipe, building, or upgrade. Construct or apply it, supply its inputs, assign labor if required, and observe one successful result. Only then mark the node as usable progress.

InterfaceThe unlocked control or option appears where the current game says it belongs.
InfrastructureRequired construction, repair, capacity, or upgrade is complete.
OperationInputs and a worker reach the capability without manual rescue.
OutcomeThe intended item, action, citizen state, or mission gate changes.

If the node completes but nothing changes, check the active objective and building details for a second prerequisite. Official updates have added tutorial buttons to building panels and adjusted Research-screen presentation, so the current interface may contain guidance absent from older videos.

Keep a branch-aware research record

Record the visible node name, prerequisite, stated effect, completion date, and the current public-branch context. Do not copy a Demo or Prologue tree into the base game: those products have different content boundaries even when terminology overlaps. Likewise, do not label an observed Steam BuildID as an official version number.

After a directive affecting capture, soldiers, production, or progression, re-read the relevant node before repeating an old priority order. AG-12 changed prison research time and soldier upgrade progress; those are examples of why exact timings need a current check.

Recover from a poor research choice

Do not compound sunk cost with immediate expansion. Finish the minimum infrastructure needed to make the unlock useful, or postpone it while restoring food, hauling, and the active objective. Cancel or delay unrelated construction queues that compete for the same material and labor.

The Progression Guide helps identify the gate, Resource Guide covers funding and delivery, and the Building List provides a current-record method for what an unlocked structure actually does.
