Combat in Pax Autocratica begins before the squad enters a sector. The colony must produce the equipment and supplies, the roster must survive losing workers to deployment, and the expedition needs one explicit objective. In the field, the Leader and soldiers must control targets without turning capture attempts or boss mechanics into uncontrolled damage.
Define success before selecting the squad
Decide whether the run is for a resource, a prisoner, map progression, a mission clear, or a boss attempt. That answer determines how much risk is justified and which tools matter. A capture trip needs target control and spare prison capacity; a difficult clear may favor survival and reliable damage; a scouting trip should preserve resources and reveal the route.
Set a return condition as well. If the target is captured, the required resource is obtained, or the squad loses the person who fills a critical role, reassess the mission. Continuing only because enemies remain turns a successful objective into a failed expedition.
Build roles around the encounter
Roles describe jobs, not permanent classes. Read current weapon, core, citizen, and unit information to see who can perform each job in the present build. Keep the roster small enough that commands and target state remain readable, then add complexity only when the group completes its objective reliably.
Match weapons and cores to a job
Weapon cores change how an attack contributes. Directive AG-14 increased Vortex Shell damage and the affected area of Thunderbolt Arrow, demonstrating that named cores can receive targeted balance changes. Choose a core because its current effect solves an encounter problem, not because an old list ranked it highly.
Read the live tooltip before manufacturing a large batch. Compare delivery method, area, target behavior, and any resource cost you can observe. A wide effect can be valuable against groups and dangerous beside a capture target. The Weapon Cores guide provides a version-aware evaluation method and keeps named patch facts separate from undocumented formulas.
Enter the sector with camera and spacing control
Survey the approach before committing the group. Identify obstacles, narrow passages, ranged threats, and a retreat direction. Keep enough separation that one hostile effect does not cover the entire squad, but not so much that a soldier is isolated beyond support. Rotate the view and reframe often enough to see both the target and the units receiving commands.
Use focus fire when one threat must stop quickly. Spread or reposition when pressure is covering multiple units. The goal is not constant input; it is clear command response. If soldiers appear to ignore a direction, reduce competing orders, verify pathing, and issue the next action from a readable position.
Control a capture attempt
AG-14 added temporary kill protection after a failed capture, but the official note says Leader melee bypasses it. The protection is a chance to reset positioning, not a reason to continue the same attack pattern. The dedicated Capture Guide follows the target from combat through prison conversion.
Read bosses as mechanics, not health bars
For a boss or named encounter, spend the first safe window observing movement, warning effects, target changes, and any battlefield object or indicator. AG-12 specifically fixed the Serina boss indicator, so older footage may show incomplete feedback. Use the indicator present in the current build and avoid asserting an obsolete sequence from a pre-fix run.
Keep a clean recovery direction and avoid committing every unit to the same point. If a mechanic repeatedly defeats the squad, change one variable: spacing, target priority, equipment job, or withdrawal timing. A controlled comparison teaches more than rebuilding the entire squad after every loss.
Debrief combat as a colony event
On return, examine health and stamina, return or replace equipment, deposit recovered materials, and restore citizens to colony work. If the expedition succeeded only because the settlement exhausted a critical reserve, the combat plan is not yet repeatable. Rebuild the consumed chain before opening another sector.
Review the current update notes after a balance Directive. A damage increase can change which core is efficient, while a bug fix can make an old workaround harmful. Note the date and branch when recording a build so another player knows what was actually tested.
Recover from a failed squad plan
If the group dies too quickly, reduce encounter size, improve spacing, and confirm equipment actually reached the deployed units. If damage is too slow, identify whether the problem is target selection, core role, downtime, or underprepared soldiers. If commands look inconsistent, use a smaller roster and a simpler path before blaming balance.
Load a pre-expedition save when the loss would cripple the colony. The base game supports saving at any time according to Steam, and AG-12 added automatic backups. Use recovery to test a specific correction, then preserve the result in a new manual slot rather than overwriting every earlier state.
