Soldiers in Pax Autocratica are both citizens of the colony and members of an expedition force. A strong roster is not simply the largest group you can deploy. It is a group whose roles support the mission while its departure leaves food, hauling, research, and essential production operating at home.
Audit each soldier before deployment
Open the live soldier panel and read current condition, equipment, abilities or slots shown by the interface, colony assignment, and any aging or status information. Do not fill in missing values from old EFAS, Demo, or Prologue guides. The public branch is the only authority for the soldier you are about to risk.
Name the job that person performs in the state. If they are the only citizen moving food or supplying an objective workshop, replace that assignment before adding them to the squad.
Build the squad around a mission
Start with the objective: survival, capture, focused boss pressure, crowd control, or acquisition and return. Add soldiers whose visible equipment and behavior cover that purpose. Keep enough direct damage to remove urgent threats, but limit uncontrolled area effects when a living capture target matters.
The store describes infantry alongside tanks and mechs, yet availability and command behavior belong to the live progression state. Do not promise a unit type merely because it appears in marketing. Deploy what your current game exposes and what the colony can replace.
Command for visibility and restraint
Keep the group within a formation you can read. Before pushing through a doorway, elevation change, or dense encounter, confirm that soldiers have followed and that their firing lines do not cross the intended prisoner. If the squad separates, restore position before adding another command.
The developers identified soldier behavior and control as active Early Access priorities on August 13. When a unit ignores an order, record the terrain, target, previous command, and mission rather than turning one failure into a universal AI rule.
Develop soldiers with recorded evidence
Directive AG-12 adjusted soldier upgrade progress, so old timing and rate claims need a current check. Record what the live interface calls the progression path, the visible cost, the change after completion, and the directive date. Compare the same soldier before and after rather than assuming every unit gains identical value.
Upgrade the role that removes the current squad failure. Survivability helps a unit that must hold pressure; control or focused output may matter more when protecting a capture sequence. Avoid consuming colony reserves on upgrades without a mission they will serve.
Recover the roster after a return
On arrival, inspect casualties, injuries, stamina, equipment, gained progression, and missing colony jobs. Restore the food and hauling spine first. Deposit recovered material, resolve prisoners, and rotate exhausted soldiers out of the next deployment.
A unit that performs poorly may have been given the wrong role, unsupported by the formation, or affected by a status. Test one change before replacing the whole squad. Use Squad Builds for composition, Elite vs Regular Soldiers for comparison, and Aging and Reproduction for lifespan planning.
